Prologue – The Last Choir

The sea died the night the voices ended. Villagers dragged themselves to the chapel perched on bleeding cliffs, mouths sewn with thread harvested from the void. Mothers clutched infants whose silence writhed beneath swaddling cloth, fathers gripped tools eaten by salt and time. They collapsed before the altar where the effigy loomed — a faceless god with arms like broken masts, its maw stretched in a scream no human throat could bear.

From beneath the stones erupted the hum. A whisper that flayed nerves, then a roar that stuttered hearts. The chapel’s foundations heaved like lungs straining to breath. The sewn mouths tore against their bindings until black ichor seeped between stitches. Children’s necks distended, skin translucent, revealing the squirming shapes of something ancient awakening inside them.

The priest’s hands convulsed around the chalice. Inside, the black liquid boiled without heat. “THE SONG DEMANDS SILENCE,” thundered a voice that shattered vision and ruptured eardrums. No mortal throat formed these words. They poured from the walls, from the air, from the spaces between heartbeats.

The villagers’ spines snapped forward in unison.

The floor split open, revealing a chasm of writhing darkness. A scream erupted, a thousand voices tangled into one abomination of sound. Windows exploded outward, glass daggers hailing down upon the churning sea below.

By dawn, nothing remained of the chapel but splinters. The tide crawled ashore bearing fragments of bone and song. The first poisoned notes of the Dirge seeping into the island’s veins.
